Obstacle

Pronunciation: /ˈäbstəkəl/

noun

a thing that blocks one’s way or prevents or hinders progress
“What does it take to be a survivor or to overcome obstacles successfully?”
If forced to answer this question in one sentence, I would say it takes a ferocious will, courage, and wisdom. However different obstacles require different resources.
For example, in Enrique’s Journey, he must overcome society. He struggles to cross the American border. He eventually overcomes his obstacles, and reunites with his mother. In this, he required basic resources such as clothes, shoes, food etc. and personal qualities such as relying on one’s own strengths.
However, most of humanity’s obstacles require internal cooperation to conquer it’s obstacles. Most of these obstacles come from how an individual’s decisions affect other people, like family or friends. These obstacles are not easily overcome, and end up more or less as ongoing compromises, because humanity does not have one specific goal.
However, at an individual level, the issues are completely different. For example, a Chinese student wanting to go to America for further education has the obstacle of money, Or a student wanting to be student union president has the obstacle of a teacher forbids him from being president. In both cases, passion is needed. If one does not have passion for something, they cannot find the will to surmount their obstacles.
To be a survivor in life, one must have courage, wisdom, a ferocious will, passion, ability to work with others, independence, and the will to survive. There is a saying in Chinese: 无坚不摧. Literally, it means no stronghold one cannot overcome. Figuratively, it means there is nothing one can’t do. As long as one has these qualities, there is nothing one can’t do. Personally, my ongoing obstacle is my laziness in my goal in losing weight. I am trying to conquer this obstacle by using my passion to push me forward, and to get to the gym everyday and eat more healthy.
